Why we marked it

  • Sri Lanka’s first great capital
  • Sri Maha Bodhi sacred tree
  • Giant stupas like Ruwanwelisaya
  • UNESCO World Heritage Site

Anuradhapura was Sri Lanka’s capital for well over a thousand years. Its sacred city includes huge white stupas such as Ruwanwelisaya and Jetavanaramaya, and the Sri Maha Bodhi, grown from a cutting of the tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment.

What to expect

The site is spread out, so hire a bicycle or tuk-tuk. Join pilgrims in white at the Sri Maha Bodhi, especially on poya days.

Good to know

  • Wear white or light, modest clothing.
  • Hot by midday; start early.
  • Sri Lankan citizens pay a much lower local rate; bring your NIC.
