Experiences across the island

From climbing Sigiriya at sunrise to watching blue whales off Mirissa, Sri Lanka packs a huge range of experiences into a small island. We list the ones worth your time, with honest tips on when to go and how to avoid the crowds.

For Sri Lankans

Many heritage sites, national parks and museums charge Sri Lankan citizens a much lower local rate than foreign visitors, so carry your NIC. Weekdays are far quieter than weekends and poya days, when sites fill with local pilgrims and families.

Good to know

What are the must-do experiences in Sri Lanka?

Climb Sigiriya or Pidurangala at sunrise, visit the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy, take the hill-country train to Ella, hike to World’s End at Horton Plains, go whale watching off Mirissa in season, and walk the ramparts of Galle Fort at sunset.

Do Sri Lankans pay less for entry tickets?

Yes. Most heritage sites and national parks have a much lower local rate for Sri Lankan citizens, and some also have a SAARC rate. Bring your NIC or passport.

When should I visit to avoid the crowds?

Go early in the morning, and on weekdays if you can. Weekends, school holidays and poya (full moon) days are the busiest times at temples and popular sites.
