Colombo 7, also known as Cinnamon Gardens, is the leafy heart of the city: wide streets, old bungalows, the National Museum and Viharamahadevi Park. It is also home to some of Colombo’s best cafés, most within a short tuk-tuk ride of each other. These are our current favourites.

For specialty coffee: Kiri Kōpi

In a grand Neoclassical building on Flower Road, Kiri Kōpi takes coffee seriously, with an extensive menu that often features Sri Lankan single origins alongside imported beans. Come for a pour-over, stay for the all-day brunch.

For a healthy, slow brunch: Café Kumbuk

Hidden at the end of Thambiah Avenue, off Independence Avenue, Café Kumbuk is a calm garden café with a menu built on local, seasonal produce and plenty of vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free choices. Note that it closes on Tuesdays.

For cake: Butter Boutique

Butter Boutique on Rosmead Place is where Colombo goes for something sweet, and its tres leches is the cake people talk about. Cinnamon rolls, brownies and layer cakes back it up.
