Kandy is small enough that nowhere is far, but where you stay still shapes your visit: whether you wake up to a lake view, walk to dinner or need a tuk-tuk for everything. Here is how the main areas compare, with places we would book in each.
Around the lake and Rajapihilla Mawatha
Rajapihilla Mawatha is the road that climbs above the southern side of Kandy Lake towards the Kandy viewpoint. Stay here and you get the classic view over the lake and town, with the Temple of the Tooth a walk away. The trade-off is the walk back uphill, and prices are a little higher than in town.
Best for: first-time visitors, couples, anyone who wants views and to walk everywhere.
The town centre
Central streets such as Cross Street put you close to the railway station, the clock tower, shops and local eateries. It is busy, practical and usually the best value, and the temple and lake are still within walking distance.
Best for: arriving or leaving by train, budget trips, short stays, people who want local food on the doorstep.
The hills around Kandy
Head up off roads like Dharmaraja Mawatha and things get greener and quieter, with balconies looking over the mountains. You will rely on tuk-tuks or a driver to get into town, but it is a good base if you are driving the hill country.
Best for: road trips, families with a driver, anyone who wants quiet evenings.
If you’re visiting
- How long: two nights covers the Temple of the Tooth, the lake, the viewpoint and the Peradeniya botanical gardens at a relaxed pace.
- Getting here: the train from Colombo Fort is a popular, scenic ride of around three hours; by road allow three to four hours depending on traffic.
- Temple visit: cover shoulders and knees and expect to remove your shoes.
- Festival season: during the Esala Perahera in July or August, prices rise and rooms sell out. Book early.
If you live in Sri Lanka
- A Kandy weekend: a lakeside or Rajapihilla Mawatha stay turns a temple visit into a proper break. Weekdays are quieter and often cheaper.
- Hosting visiting family: central hotels on Cross Street keep everyone close to the station and temple; the hills suit larger groups travelling by van.
- Perahera with family: book rooms with views of the route early, and plan around road closures on procession nights.
