Trincomalee, on the east coast, has one of the world’s great natural harbours, the clifftop Koneswaram temple and long white beaches at Uppuveli and Nilaveli. Pigeon Island is a short boat ride away for snorkelling and diving.
The east coast is at its best from around May to September, when the south and west are wetter.
