Why we marked it

  • One of the world’s most scenic train rides
  • Tea plantations, tunnels and waterfalls
  • Running Nanu Oya–Ella–Badulla in 2026
  • Reserved and unreserved seats

The hill-country railway is one of the most famous train journeys in the world. The full route from Kandy is being repaired after Cyclone Ditwah, but the most scenic section, from Nanu Oya (near Nuwara Eliya) through Haputale to Ella and Badulla, has been running since June 2026.

What to expect

Hang out of the open doors, watch tea pickers on the slopes and pass through tunnels and over viaducts. From Nanu Oya to Ella takes a few hours.

Good to know

  • Check the latest status with Sri Lanka Railways before travelling; sections are reopening in stages.
  • Book reserved seats in advance in peak season; unreserved tickets are sold at the station.
  • Sit on the right-hand side heading towards Ella for most of the best views.
